Leather is in Vogue... literally! I poured through issues of Vogue Magazine in search of all things leather. Here is what I found:
JANUARY:
Wow! As soon as I turned the cover page of January’s issue I found leather. The first ad in the magazine is a spread for Louis Vuitton. This spread features a gorgeous brown leather purse on top of the legendary Louis Vuitton printed leather trunk.
The appearance of leather didn’t stop there. I counted 14 images of leather throughout the issue. Leather pieces were featured in both advertisements and editorials, but to my dismay, most of the pieces were shoes, belts, and purses. I thought there would be more leather apparel featured.
However, there were a few leather garments, such as the one featured in the "Material Girls" editorial shown above.
FEBRUARY:
Leather apparel continues to cover the pages of Vogue. However, I was surprised as I flipped through the pages, to find that most of the featured leather pieces were purses and shoes. There were more leather outfits and garments in this issue than in the last. However, I still expected to see more leather than was shown. Still, there were ads featuring full leather apparel and outfits. I found Miu Miu's ad to be a good example of this. The model on the left is in a white leather trench coat with brown leather gloves, the middle model is in a long white leather skirt and carrying a leather purse, and the model on the right is wearing a gorgeous tan leather suit. The finish on the garments is patent, which I haven't seen much of in clothes. New trend alert!
Longchamp also flaunted a full leather look in its ad. In the picture on the left the model is wearing neutral colors and a gorgeous fitted leather jacket. THe jaacket isn't the typical rebellious leather jacket, but rather a more polished piece. The picture on the right also shows a polished look. THe leather Longchamp bag is sporty and sophisticated.
I also liked the Valentino ad. It didn't showcase full leather garb, but rather a jacket with leather trimming and the signature Valentino studs. I liked this ad because it was artsy. It looked like something you might see on a fashion blog rather than a typical fashion advertisement.
Leather pieces were also featured in editorials. In Storm Troopers, a fashion feature about the men who helped restore New York after Hurricane Sandy, leather was seen on both the models and the public service employees.
In the picture above, the female model in the front center is wearing a tough looking black leather jacket and a red skirt with leather detailing. In the picture below, a few of the police officers are sporting leather jackets. The female models are wearing gladiator black leather shoes and the female model on the right is wearing a turquoise and blue textured leather skirt. I think this picture is especially interesting, in regards to leather, because it shows how versatile the material is. It shows how leather is not only fashionable, but also useful and appealing to many people in a wide variety of jobs and occupations.
Also, Here Comes the Night, is a piece featuring couples in New York who, "Wrap(ing) themselves in chiffon and satin, velvet and silk twill, and leather and denim". I am particularly fond of the blue leather vest that Max Snow wore. I think it takes a lot of courage for a man to wear a blue leather vest, but he pulls it off and looks dashing in it.
Overall, while I was surprised there wasn't more leather clothing featured, there was still plenty of leather shown. There was also a broad range of leather looks from polished to rocker. It is easy to see that leather is a hot trend that is continuing to grow. I expect to see more leather in next month's issue.
MARCH:
By looking through this issue, you can definitely tell that leather is in. This issue had all of the leather accessories and small apparel items that have been featured in previous issues. However, it also showcased more full on leather looks. The leather shown was also in a wide variety of textures and colors. Many of the leather items were in bright spring colors. I also noticed a focus on exotic skins like alligator or crocodile. Here is a look at some of the ads that highlight these trends I noticed in this month's issue.
Leather was also worn by the models in the editorials. I noticed some interesting trends in the editorials too. In The Emperor's New Clothes, Prada's leather sock was also shown in multiple pictures as was Celine's leather knotted cuff. These seem to be emerging trends, but I'm not sure how quickly consumers are going to buy into them.
In On the Prowl, the models wore long leather gloves in varying colors in all the pictures. Maybe it's because I'm from the south, but I haven't seen anyone sport this trend.
The editorials are introducing new trends in leather to the consumer. It will be interesting to watch these trends develop.
APRIL:
By glancing at the cover of this month's issue, I knew I could expect to see plenty of leather. Michelle Obama was wearing a beautiful blue Reed Krakoff dress with black leather detail around the waist. I counted leather on 44 pages in this issue. However, I was surprised to find less leather head to toe and more leather accessories. I also saw lots of beige and white leather and exotic leather such as alligator and snake skin.
Furthermore, gloves and Prada's leather socks were featured, as they were in the last issue.
When it came to editorials, I was disappointed at first because leather was only used to accessorize the outfits. But then I went on to read What to Wear Where. The article talks about "sculpted athletic shapes, sport stripes, and white leather". Many of the pictures show how to wear white and nude leather for the warmer seasons.
